This is something I’ve been wanting to talk about for quite a while now. As I’ve become more experienced on Fiverr and as a freelancer, I’ve come to realize just how important this is.
I think most Fiverr sellers have the wrong approach when it comes to Fiverr.
Having the correct approach can really help you on Fiverr and beyond. It will actually allow you to depend a lot less on Fiverr.
This is going to depend on what you sell on Fiverr but in general, you need to start thinking of yourself as a freelancer on Fiverr and start looking at Fiverr as just a platform for your services. The last thing you want to do is depend on Fiverr.
Most people look at Fiverr and see it was a way to make money instead of just a platform they’re leveraging to help them make money.
Why’s This Important?
Let’s say you’re someone offering writing services on Fiverr, if you look at Fiverr as just a platform for your business and not look at Fiverr as your business, you begin to open yourself up to other platforms that can begin to support your business.
Fiverr can be a way for you to find leads and customers that can pay you a lot more for more expensive services.
So now, what you should be looking at doing is creating a website for yourself and your services which will act as a portfolio and another platform for your services. This way, you can control the marketing and the customer, and Fiverr is simply a channel where customers can find you.
Another example, if you’re selling video testimonials, YouTube should be a platform where you can create videos to build a portfolio.
If you’re a graphic designer, you should be on Behance or DeviantArt.
If you’re a web designer, you should be active in web design communities.
Now We’re Building a Business
Once we make this mindset shift, we’re starting to look at ourselves as business owners and thus building a business. We’re thinking about the long-term.
What if Fiverr went away tomorrow? What if Fiverr shut down your account tomorrow?
Will you have sufficiently built up relationships with past customers that they can do business with you again? How could past customers find you? How would you get new customers?
Now you’re no longer just a Fiverr seller.
You’re a freelancer who happens to sell on Fiverr.
This way, when potential customers are looking to do business with you, you’ll not only look more professional, you’ll look more competent. If you’re a web designer with a blog and website, and you’re frequently writing about the web design industry, you’ll look like a more reputable and trustworthy person to do business with. You’ll likely be able to charge more, too.
How to Create a Blog/Website (Your Own Platform)
I’m going to briefly touch upon how I would go about making a website for my Fiverr gigs. Just know that there are a ton of free resources and guides out there that will walk you through setting up a WordPress website, step-by-step. It would be redundant for me to do that.
First, I highly recommend making your website a WordPress website. Buy a domain from NameCheap and purchase the cheapest hosting (for $5 a month) from SiteGround. SiteGround is the best shared hosting I’ve ever used. Other servers such as Bluehost are slow and unreliable since they don’t have any caps to the amount of users on a single shared server.
SiteGround also has a one-click install option for WordPress, making it extremely easy to setup a WordPress website.
Once you buy your domain (firstlastname.com), purchase hosting, and install WordPress, I recommend heading over to ThemeForest to purchase a professional theme at a decent price.
Having a professional theme is extremely important. If you want visitors to trust you and see you as a professional, you’ll want a professionally designed website. The good news is that it doesn’t have to cost you an arm and a leg.
What Your Website Should Look Like
So, there are a few things I’m going to recommend your website definitely have. Let’s go over the pages and sections of your website and how to construct them, as well as what they do for you and your online business.
About page – This is your opportunity to share your story, experience, expertise, and personality with potential clients. You’d be surprised how many people want to know who they’re hiring. It allows clients to trust you more. Trust is an important part of getting people to give you their money.
You can copy this from your Fiverr profile if you wish but you have the opportunity here to go as long as you want, talking about yourself.
Will everyone read this? No, of course not.
However, the 10% or so that do will be that much more convinced to do business with you.
Be honest. Talk about your upbringing, your early life, how you got started specializing in the service you offer as well as your credentials. Where did you go to school? Who are some big name clients you’ve worked for? Where are some relevant places you worked?
This section is almost like a resume. You will want to have your real face and name here. Be as transparent as possible and put yourself out there.
I would also recommend embedding your Fiverr Badge here. To do this, read Fiverr’s article on creating seller badges.
Portfolio – Here’s where you get to show off all the work you’ve done for past clients. This is arguably one of the most important pages on your website. If someone has some interest in hiring you, you can be sure one of the first things they’ll want to see is the work you’ve done and who you’ve worked with.
You can simply put some of the work you’ve done for buyers on Fiverr here with their review under the work you did for them.
Don’t have anything to show? Create some samples from scratch or work for free for a client or two to build up your portfolio.
For more unique services such as SEO, instead of a portfolio page you might want to have a testimonials page. This is where you’ll ask for past clients to share their website and a few sentences on what they thought of you and your service. You can paste a few Fiverr reviews here if you have some.
Services page – Your services page will be your money maker page. This is the section of your website where you describe the services you offer in great detail. Additionally, this is where you allow clients to order from you.
Basically, you’ll want to outline all the services you offer and what’s included in each service. This is where you put all your gigs. You can embed gigs here using Fiverr Anywhere (Selling > Promote Your Business) or by using a service like Iframely. This will allow visitors to buy your Fiverr Gigs directly through your website.
It’s really important to provide as much detail on your Gigs as possible. Include details on each package, what they include, what they don’t include, turnaround time, and pricing. Treat it like a sales page.
Contact page – What good is your website if potential clients can’t reach you?
You’ll want to make yourself as accessible as possible. Include your phone number, your email, your Skype handle, WhatsApp, whatever.
You might want to include a blurb here as well letting people know how fast you will usually get back to them.
It might be a good idea to include a contact form here as well. Many WordPress plugins will allow you to do this.
